05/28/07 JUST DISCOVERED -- THE ATHENS COUNTY,OHIO RECORDER HAS RECKLESSLY PUT RECORDS BACK ONLINE WITH SSNS - BUT NOT HER OWN... SO HERE IS HERS ... AND SOME OTHERS' ARE LINKED BELOW.

The Athens County Recorder, Julia Michael Scott, has again linked up records complete with SSNs on the internet site hosted by a private company where ANYONE in the world can see them. She had taken all records off line after The Virginia Watchdog's BJ Ostergren called citizens there on May 17th and 18th and told them their SSNs were online thanks to Mrs. Scott. Scott broke all links to the images late in the day Friday May 18th, but then bowing to special interests and pressure from people who didn't want to have to drive to her office to search the records, she put the images of them back online Wednesday, May 23rd. She did protect her own SSN and that of her husband though - and a few other people's - before re-linking the images, however, most citizens have no clue their SSNs are still online and available to the world. Free for the taking. And many of those records with SSNs on them involve people who have moved. If her staff has been working for nine months to redact out SSNs, why were there so many still of them on the internet? And she should have blacked out all digits of the SSNs instead of leaving the last four which can still get someone into a person's credit card account, bank account, medical records, etc. This Athens Messenger article from May 24th tells why Scott says she went back online. Her reasons for putting those records back on the internet are very lame since the courthouse is still there and usually open... and the records are openly available there complete with SSNs since the original record cannot be altered. If businesses or anyone else wanted to get into those records they should have to drive to the courthouse like they used to do years ago before the internet was invented and when a trip there was the only way one could get copies of them. So since Mrs. Scott is hell bent on exposing the records showing SSNs, home addresses, signatures, account numbers, etc of police, prosecutors, judges, and others who may not want their info on the World Wide web, The Virginia Watchdog is going to print a few records here that we found on her site. We are doing this for all citizens of Athens County whose SSNs and other info is still online and feel powerless to do anything.
